How To Remove Facebook From Your Device Permanently

Ever consider getting rid of your Facebook account? Perhaps you don’t want to think about how blogging could jeopardize your privacy or that of your spouse. Or perhaps you simply want to spend less time online and get some time back in your life. Whatever your reason is for leaving Facebook, you should be aware that it is rather simple to delete your account. There are two methods to leave: one is permanent for those who are certain they want out, and the other is reversible in case you change your mind.

Deleting Your Facebook Account

Only those who are positive they won’t use Facebook again and are okay with the concept of starting over in case they change their minds can choose to delete their account. Facebook permanently deletes your account when you do so. According to Facebook, the deletion procedure normally takes one month, though “some information may remain in backup copies and logs for up to 90 days.”

On your computer, go to the Account ownership and control page in your Meta Accounts Center (if you can’t access the Meta Accounts Center, go to facebook.com/deactivate_delete_account), pick “Delete Account,” select the “Continue” option, and then follow the on-screen instructions to delete your account.

On your phone:

  • Open the Facebook app.
  • In the lower right corner, tap the profile symbol.
  • From the cog symbol in the top right corner, choose Settings.
  • Decide on “Meta Accounts Center.”

  • Select “Personal details.”
  • Select “Account ownership and control.”
  • Select “Deactivation or deletion.”
  • Select your account.
  • Select “Delete your account” and select “Continue.”

Remember that even after you cancel your account, Facebook will still retain any communications you’ve sent to other users or postings you’ve shared with groups.

Instructions for Downloading Facebook Data

You might want to look at the data Facebook has about you and your activity before permanently cancelling your account. Visit the Facebook Your Information page to find out more. Downloading a copy of all the information Facebook has on you is a good idea. On your laptop:

  • Select the profile symbol in the top right corner of Facebook.com.
  • Choosing “Settings & Privacy” > “Settings.”
  • Select “Download profile information” under “Your Facebook Information.”

Go to the Facebook app on your phone and then

  • Open the Facebook app.
  • In the lower right corner, tap the profile symbol.
  • From the cog symbol in the top right corner, choose Settings.
  • “Download your information” can be found by scrolling down to the section “Your Information.”

  • Tap the “Create File” button after selecting the data you want to download (by default, all data is selected).

It’s a good idea even if you want to stay on Facebook because you could be startled by how much information is available. You want all of your info, why? One thing is that it’s quite eye-opening to realize how much information you’ve posted on Facebook. It’s possible for even casual users to discover that they have disclosed a staggering quantity of information about me.

Make cautious to preserve your own archive safely if you do decide to download it. There will probably be a sizable collection of private data there that you don’t want to share with others.

Deactivating Your Facebook Account

An alternative to deletion is deactivation, which suspends your account and conceals your timeline on the website. Facebook doesn’t remove any of your data in case you decide to rejoin the site. I’ve used this option before, and it’s a simple way to step away from Facebook before turning it back on again. Once you do, everything you did on the website, including your friends, likes, prior posts, and other activities, is restored.

However, you should be aware that cancelling your account will not remove your name from the lists of friends that your friends have. It can make sense to let your friends know you’re temporarily leaving the network if it disturbs you that they might question why they are still able to see you as a friend even though they are not seeing your posts.

If you don’t see the Meta Accounts Center on your computer, go to facebook.com/deactivate_delete_account, pick “Deactivate Account,” click on the “Continue” button, and then follow the on-screen instructions to delete your account.

On your phone:

  • Open the Facebook app.
  • Tap your profile icon in the lower right corner.
  • Select Settings (cog icon) in the upper right corner.
  • Select “Meta Accounts Center.”
  • Select “Personal details.”
  • Select “Account ownership and control.”
  • Select “Deactivation or deletion.”
  • Select your account.
  • Select “Deactivate your account” and select “Continue.”
